Growth of the data

3.    Give examples of the growth of data (including measures of data)

In the early days of the digital revolution, data was produced mainly as PCs were adopted and became ubiquitous, and later as music, movies, TV and games became digital. These days, there are far more consumer digital toys than there are humans, all constantly producing, accessing and sharing data. All of that still leads to increasing data as more traditional media is converted to digital, as our entertainment libraries grow, and as video and audio resolution keeps improving. Almost all the data we use on these “toys” either exists on, or also has iterations in, enterprise data centres and servers on the internet.

  • 90% of the world’s data has been created in the last two years alone.
  • The volume of data created by U.S. companies alone each year is enough to fill 10 000 Libraries of Congress.
  • Connected cars are making a push to be the most important new digital platform, with 220 million on the road by 2020.
  • Most companies only analyse 12% of the data they have.
  • By last year 2020, there will be more than 50 billion smart connected devices in the world, collecting, analysing and sharing data.
